Silica gel is a granular version of Silicon Dioxide, which is synthetically derived from sodium silicate. This gel is harder as compared to other common gels like gelatin and agar. The most evident usage of Silica Gel was noticed in 1640 and later, during World War I time. Silica Gel was primarily used to adsorb vapors and gases. In recent times, this gel is used to absorb humidity.

How did it come to limelight?

During the World War II, Silica Gel was a welcomed trend to protect the devices and military equipment. This gel was also used as a fluid cracking catalyst for the accelerated production of high octane gasoline. Silica Gel was also used as the feedstock for the famous Synthetic rubber program.
