Knife Throwing as an Art

Knife Throwing as an Art

A knife which is designed specially to throw is called a throwing knife. Light in weight, this knife is generally different in construction from a regular knife. Because of such varying designs, different throwing techniques were adopted. People from diverse cultural backgrounds practice knife throwing in sync with their tradition and rituals. However, caution is required while throwing a knife as a completed action.

A few pointers to keep in mind while throwing a knife:-

The ideal combination

The weight of your knife remains the focal point in every decision. Be it blade-heavy, handle-heavy, or balanced knife, you need to be decisive while selecting a throwing knife.  The combination of sharp blade and heavy handle in throwing knives is most valued  by beginners. Since such kinds of knives are easy to rotate, the time taken to complete the action gradually slows down.

The grip

Grip is the second most important stage . The grip style acts as a defining factor for hunters and knife enthusiasts. Always remember a firm but delicate hold is the most vital skill for throwing a knife. If you exert a forceful hold, the release of knife will be hampered, ultimately obstructing the complete process. If your knife is very lightly gripped, there are possibilities of it flying out of your hand and injuring someone on its way.

 The precise force

Stance of the thrower is equally important. Throwing a knife is a test of your talent and focus. Try to keep an easy movement enabling only requisite amount of force. As much you practice, the whole process will get easier.

According to the rules of science, heavy objects require a greater amount of force to propel over a distance. In such cases, if you achieve the balance between fluidity and finesse, then aiming for the point slightly above the target would do  the job. This rule stands tall for heavier objects to be thrown at a desired speed and distance.

A clean knife has a longer life

Always ensure proper cleaning of the blade and knife after throwing session. Once you have hit the target, clean your favorite knife after the practice session. The tints of oil secreted through your body glands can degrade the quality of blade or sometimes cause rusting. Even in  cases where you are targeting a loaf of meat or something similar, cleaning the blade is mandatory.

If you are practicing knife throwing for first couple of times, use a straight-cut fixed blade knife. Never use a folding or lockback knife. In addition, once you have thrown a knife, stand back and keep your eyes on the target until the knife has reached safely. This is a precautionary measure to keep yourself out of the path of the knife.
